‘Seasons’ Is A Calligraphy Workshop Taught By Aoi Yamaguchi That Focuses On Seasonal Transitions And The Beauty Of Nature As Captured Through Poetry.

During This Unique Hands-On Two-Hour Workshop, You Will Be Introduced To Classic Haiku Poems Using The Chosen Kigo For September, “蜻蛉” (Tonbo) And Then Practice Writing The Characters. This Workshop Will Teach Basic Japanese Calligraphy Shodo Skills, Through A Meditative Calligraphy Process Where You Find Balance Between The Mind And Body. The Instructor Will Go Over Calligraphy Basics: How To Use The Brush And Materials, Proper Posture, Getting To Know Japanese Paper And Sumi Ink, As Well As Basic Calligraphy Strokes. Participants Will Practice The Kigo “蜻蛉” In Regular Script (Kaisho) On Hanshi Paper, Inspired By The Haikus Introduced During The Session.
This Workshop Is Designed For Adult Beginners. No Prior Experience Is Necessary.

Materials:
Students Do Not Need To Bring Any Materials. All Calligraphy Supplies And Materials Needed For The Workshop Will Be Provided By The Instructor As Part Of The Workshop Fee. Original Worksheets And Handouts Will Also Be Provided And The Lesson Will Be Taught In English. Knowledge Of The Japanese Language Is Not Necessary.
History:
Born And Raised In Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi Began Studying Calligraphy At Age Six, Earning The Distinction Of Master Student Calligrapher At Age 14. Since Landing In The United States In 2004, She Has Performed And Exhibited Her Works In Galleries, Museums, Universities And Festivals In The U.S., Across Europe And Japan. Her Works Show Her Exploration In Juxtaposing The Traditional Eastern Classics And Her Contemporary Artistic Expressions, As Well As Her Unique Ambition Of Transforming Two-Dimensional Art Of Japanese Calligraphy Into The Art Of Physical Expression Through Performances. Currently Residing In Los Angeles, Yamaguchi Continues Her Work On Her Conceptual Calligraphy Installations, Exhibitions, And Performances As She Continues To Push The Boundaries Of Traditional Eastern Classics And Contemporary Artistic Expression.
